ARE SATIN AND SILK THE SAME?

ARE SATIN AND SILK THE SAME?

Have you wondered what exactly is Satin? The smooth, glossy, silk-like fabric we often wear.

WHAT EXACTLY COMES TO OUR MINDS WHEN WE THINK OF SATIN?
A luxurious and versatile fabric that is often used in a wide range of garments and textiles. Something so smooth with a glossy surface which looks elegant and sophisticated.

IS SATIN REALLY A FABRIC OR JUST A WEAVING TECHNIQUE?
Nowadays satin has become synonymous with a shiny, smooth fabric that people often think is silk. But, it is actually a type of weave and a variety of threads or yarns can be woven in the satin technique be it cotton, silk, polyester, nylon, etc.

Satin is made using a special weaving technique that creates a high number of floating yarns on the surface. This gives the fabric its signature shine, smoothness and drapability making it a popular choice for a large variety of garments.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SATIN:
This technique came from China in the middle ages where silk was woven in the Satin technique that gave the fabric its glossy, smooth, and luxurious finish. The cloth was named after the port it originated from, Zaitum. Satin fabric made from silk was reserved for royalty and rich aristocrats as it was a sign of wealth and prestige.

HOW SATIN BECAME SO ACCESSIBLE?
Satin slowly took over the fashion industry in the 1900s due to two main reasons: one because of its luxurious characteristics and second it was getting produced using polyester and other synthetic yarns that made the fabric cheaper and easier to access. Most of the satin fabric used in clothing now is synthetic.

So the next time you buy satin fabric, do ask what it is made of.
